Learn moreFrequently Asked Questions
Do sole traders need an ABN to invoice?
An ABN is strongly recommended. Without an ABN on your invoice, the payer may withhold 47% of the payment. Applying for an ABN is free through the Australian Business Register.
Do sole traders need to charge GST?
Only if your GST turnover is $75,000 or more per year. Below this threshold, GST registration is voluntary. If you are not registered, do not charge GST and do not label your invoice as a 'tax invoice'.
What records should a sole trader keep for the ATO?
The ATO requires you to keep records of all income (including copies of invoices), expenses, GST records (if registered), and bank statements for at least five years.
Is a sole trader the same as a sole proprietor?
Yes. 'Sole trader' is the term used in Australia (and the UK), while 'sole proprietor' is more common in the United States and Canada. Both refer to an individual running a business without a separate legal entity. The invoicing requirements are identical.
Can I create a sole trader invoice without GST?
Yes. If you are not registered for GST, simply use the heading 'Invoice' instead of 'Tax Invoice' and do not show any GST amount. Our generator lets you toggle GST off for a clean, non-GST invoice.
